Technology in the Classroom

We believe digital resources should be used to enrich learning, promote student achievement, and advance students toward deep, authentic learning. By providing devices for student use, we help ensure their digital environment is safe, healthy, and representative of our ever-changing modern world. Find out more on our ASD20 Digital Resource Philosophy page.

Benefits of a District Provided Device (DPD)

  • Access to classroom digital tools and content on demand
  • Appropriate software licensing
  • Device compliance for District and State assessments
  • Content-filtering software for students in grades K-12 at home and on campus
  • Malware detection for security
  • Ability to print at school with a District Provided Device

The Student Use of the Internet and Electronic Communications Policy (Policy JS) outlines the expectations of student use. Be sure to review the Acceptable Use Policy available under Related Links on this page.

Fees

A District Provided Device (DPD) will be provided to each student in grades 3-12. There is a $60 annual use fee assigned to each student account by July 13, 2026.

Individuals in the following programs are exempt from the fee:

  • Free and Reduced Lunch (with release of information)
  • McKinney-Vento
  • Youth in Foster Care
  • Other programs may qualify for exemption - check with your program administrator

The following schools are not participating in the program:

  • The Classical Academy Schools
  • New Summit Charter Academy
  • Home School Academy

Online and Summer School

Village Middle and Village High School students receive a DPD and are assessed the $60 annual fee.

No additional fee is charged for summer school students if the fee was paid for the previous school year. If a device is lost or damaged during summer school, a fine of up to $515 will be assessed in Infinite Campus (IC).

Receiving Your Computer, Fees, and Checkout

  • Each student will be loaned a device, device case, screen protector, and power supply. All assets remain the property of Academy District 20.
  • The $60 annual fee supports the sustainability of an equitable 1:1 District Provided Device program for all students in grades 3-12 and covers one-time accidental damage repair.
  • Devices will be checked out to students around the start of school, with each school site determining its deployment process.
  • Fee payment will be displayed in Infinite Campus immediately regardless of payment method. Parent/guardians will receive a payment confirmation email. School bookkeepers can access payment information in Infinite Campus.
  • Students should not place permanent personalization materials on their device, case, or other district-owned equipment. Equipment must be returned in its original condition.
  • DPDs are not permitted to leave the country due to customs regulations.
  • All student devices in grades K-12 will be filtered by grade level, even on non-district networks, in accordance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA).

Damage to the Device

If the annual fee is paid and damage is a one-time accident, the district will repair the device at no additional cost. Negligent or repeated damage will result in a fine assessed in Infinite Campus. Students should notify their teacher or District Technology Technician (DTT) promptly for repairs.

If the fee is not paid prior to damage, the full cost of repair will be charged.

Protective cases and screen protectors are provided to help prevent damage. Removing these accessories may void coverage under the $60 fee and result in fines.

All equipment checked out is the student's responsibility. Parents/guardians are responsible for repair or replacement costs. Current maximum costs include:

  • Broken screen replacement: $274
  • Broken keyboard: $30
  • Broken case bottom: $25
  • Broken palm rest: $30
  • Broken or lost protective case: $30
  • Lost power adapter: $30
  • Removed screen protector: $6
  • Full device replacement: $515

Only certified district technicians may perform repairs. Unauthorized repairs will result in a $515 charge. Students will receive a replacement device during repairs, which may be a different model.

Lost, Stolen, or Not Returned Devices

The $60 fee covers one-time accidental damage only and does not apply to lost or stolen devices or components. A fine up to $515 will be assessed for replacement. Parents must file a police report with the Colorado Springs Police Department and submit a copy to their school's Technology Technician (DTT). This does not eliminate the fine.

Loss or damage of protective cases, screen protectors, and chargers is not covered by the accidental damage repair and may result in fines assessed in Infinite Campus.

Reduced Fees

Families using the Free and Reduced program must complete the required application including the Release of Information form to reduce the DPD fee. Free and Reduced students will be assessed a fee, but it will be marked as satisfied. Visit our Free and Reduced page for details.

If damage is a one-time accident, the district will repair the device at no additional cost. Negligent or repeated damage will result in a fine assessed in Infinite Campus. Students should notify their teacher or DTT promptly.

Families not qualifying for Free and Reduced but unable to pay the fee should contact their school principal to request a reduction.

Statewide Assistive Technology, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (SWAAAC) Evaluations

Students qualifying for a device through a SWAAAC evaluation, as documented in their Individual Education Plan (IEP), are responsible for only one DPD fee. SWAAAC devices do not incur an annual fee. Parents/guardians will receive a separate SWAAAC Equipment Release Form explaining replacement costs if the device is damaged.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

Students choosing to bring a personal device will have limited access to the district network. Access to state and district assessments is prohibited on personal devices and is subject to Policy JICJ (Student Use of Electronic Communication Device).

If your student plans to use a personal device, please complete the online BYOD Request Form (available after July 13, 2026) by Sept. 21, 2026. The fee will be waived upon approval. The form must be completed each school year.

Students will not be able to print at school with personal devices, and district IT staff will not support personal devices.

Leaving Academy District 20

Upon termination of enrollment, the student or parent/guardian must return the device, case, and power supply in the same condition as received or be liable for full replacement or repair costs. Equipment should be returned to the student’s school or mailed to:

Academy District 20
Attn: Information Technology Department
1110 Chapel Hills Drive
Colorado Springs, CO 80920

Parents must request a refund by submitting a Help Desk ticket to help@asd20.org. Refund amounts depend on item condition and the date the student left the district.

Devices at Home Over the Summer

As part of summer technology maintenance, Academy District 20 will collect all district-provided student devices for inventory and health checks, except for students in grades 8-12 enrolled in online summer school or AP exams.

Before returning devices, families should ensure:

  • The device is in good working condition
  • All issued equipment is included (charger, protective case, screen protectors)
  • The device and accessories are clean
  • Any stickers or personalization have been removed, returning the device to its issued condition

K-2nd Grade iPads

iPads for students in grades K-2 remain at school unless special arrangements are made.

Leaving Academy District 20 Over the Summer

If your student will not return to a D20 school in fall 2026, please notify the school to check in the device, which will remain at the school.

If leaving the district, devices must be returned to the Information Technology Help Desk at:

1110 Chapel Hills Drive
Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Unreturned devices incur a $515 fine.
